We know that – when it is safe to do so – contact between children and their birth parents is hugely important for a child’s wellbeing . Our influencing work in this area focuses on ensuring safe, supportive relationships between families and children can be built and maintained when a child is in care.
Exploring birth mothers’ experiences of contact after adoption
We work with women to maintain relationships with their children after adoption, which research has shown has a positive impact on children’s wellbeing and development. Our work identifies key areas of practice that have, or could, make a real difference to maintaining these relationships.
Kinship care
Almost half of the children of women who are currently on the Pause Programme are in kinship care arrangements. We are working to highlight the experiences of birth mothers who have children placed in kinship care, focusing on some of the specific challenges they face.
Relationships with children
Women working with Pause tell us that their relationships with their children are hugely important. Support to maintain these connections is consistently one of their top priorities.
